Diese Woche haben wir im Big Picture Podcast den Autor und investigativen Journalisten Antony Loewenstein zu Gast.

Anfang 2024 haben wir mit Loewenstein über sein Bestseller-Buch „The Palestine Laboratory” gesprochen, in dem er beschreibt, wie Israel Hightech-Waffen in Gaza testet, bevor es sie in die ganze Welt exportiert.

Seitdem wurde „The Palestine Laboratory“ von Al Jazeera als Doku umgesetzt, in der Loewenstein nach Mexiko, Griechenland, Indien und Südafrika reist, um zu untersuchen, wie diese Technologie die Strafverfolgung und staatliche Überwachung weltweit verändert.

Ein Teil seiner Arbeit befasst sich damit, wie Silicon Valley und der KI-Sektor den Aufstieg eines neuen Wettrüstens vorangetrieben haben, in dem Technologieriesen wie Microsoft und Amazon jetzt um lukrative Verteidigungsaufträge im Wert von mehreren zehn Milliarden Dollar konkurrieren.

Dies sind dieselben Unternehmen, die einst versprochen hatten, ihre Macht nur für gute Zwecke einzusetzen. Google hat bekanntlich die Worte „Don't Be Evil” (Sei nicht böse) in seinem Manifest verankert.

Hinter den Kulissen sah es jedoch ganz anders aus.

This week on the Big Picture Podcast, we’re joined by author and investigative journalist Antony Loewenstein.

We spoke to Loewenstein early in 2024 about his best-selling book ‘The Palestine Laboratory’ - which chronicled how Israel tests high tech weapons in Gaza before exporting them to the world.

Since then, The Palestine Laboratory has been turned into a documentary with Al Jazeera, where Loewenstein travels to Mexico, Greece, India and South Africa to investigate how this technology is changing law enforcement and government surveillance around the world.

Part of his work has examined how Silicon Valley and the AI sector have fueled the rise of a new arms race, one where technology giants like Microsoft and Amazon now compete for lucrative defence contracts worth tens of billions of dollars.

These are the same companies that once promised only to use their powers for good. Google famously enshrined the words ‘Don’t Be Evil’ into their manifesto.

But what was happening behind the scenes was a different story.
