In recent years, investigative reporting has highlighted coordinated efforts in Western countries —especially the US, UK, and EU— to suppress online speech under the guise of countering “disinformation” or “hate speech,” a system often called the Censorship-Industrial Complex. In the EU, Germany plays a central role, with numerous governmental and private actors monitoring online discourse and urging ever-greater levels of content suppression. Building on our work mapping the US Censorship-Industrial Complex for Matt Taibbi and collaborating with German experts, we launched an initiative —introduced at the European Parliament and in Berlin— to map Germany’s content-controls.

Speakers at the event included liber-net director Andrew Lowenthal; journalist Aya Velázquez, who broke the COVID-related RKI Files story; political scientist Ulrike Guérot, who has faced significant censorship and public attacks; and former parliamentary member Sevim Dağdelen. The discussion was moderated by journalist Florian Warweg.
