Ahmed Samir Santawy, Masterstudent an der Central European University (CEU), wurde inhaftiert und war politischer Gefangener in Ägypten. Wie die UN-Arbeitsgruppe für willkürliche Inhaftierungen festgestellt hat, wurde er willkürlich und unter Verstoß gegen die Allgemeine Erklärung der Menschenrechte inhaftiert, nur weil er Meinungsfreiheit und freie Meinungsäußerung als Forscher und Privatperson in Anspruch genommen hat.

Jailed for exercising freedom of expression, Ahmed Samir Santawy—a Master’s student at Central European University (CEU)—has now spent one year and four months as a prisoner of conscience in Egypt. As the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has found, he has been detained arbitrarily and in contravention of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, merely for exercising his freedom of opinion and expression as a researcher and as a private citizen.
